Brain development: How to stimulate and encourage child brain development

Posted on 06-30-2014

A child's growth does not only apply to physical growth, but also to mental growth. It is important to consistently stimulate a young child’s brain to ensure that their mental development will be just as strong as their physical development. At Kids 'R' Kids Learning Academy of North Peachtree City, we have been implementing a successful and exclusive brain development curriculum in our classrooms for many years. Here, we share some tips on how to help parents with child brain stimulation at home:

Make sure your child gets enough sleep

Sleep is vitally important for proper brain development, which is why the average person requires at least eight hours of sleep each night. Studies show that if one does not get enough sleep, brain cells will not have an opportunity to fully develop. Parents need to ensure a child has a healthy sleep routine every night. Instilling this routine in a child from a young age will improve their brain development as they get older.

Provide your child with nutritionally balanced foods

Eating the right foods and the appropriate portions of food can help develop a child's brain. A child should eat three full meals every day. The types of food that help with brain development include:

  • Whole grains
  • Tuna and salmon
  • Avocados

These types of foods help with cognitive skills, memory development and are also a good source of protein. Be sure to include plenty of water throughout the day.

Help your child develop a love for reading

Reading develops the brain in numerous ways. Reading a book can essentially turn on all the senses, which is not only good for young developing brains but also for learning a language. Reading allows a child to develop their imagination, whether they are being read a book or reading one themselves. Parents should take time to read to their child daily, which will help the child learn to read on their own. New language can also grow the brain, therefore reading to a child in another language will further support brain growth and development.
